  • DJMC hosts workshop on tools and strategies to verify online content (May 29, 2021)

Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (DJMC), Government College for Women, M. A. Road, Srinagar organised an online workshop on ‘Social Media Audit: Tools and strategies to monitor social media and online content’ on May 29, 2021 (Saturday). Google News Initiative certified trainer, Dr. Archana Kumari was the resource person of the workshop. Dr. Archana works as Assistant Professor at Department of Mass Communication and New Media at Central University of Jammu. She has also been working as a Fact-Checking Trainer, training hundreds of journalists and students in last two years. In the backdrop of the overwhelming flood of misinformation, the resource person demonstrated the use of various tools and techniques to ascertain the veracity of social media content. She cited relevant examples related to monitoring of Facebook , Twitter, YouTube and verifying websites.

  • DJMC hosts talk on ethics and aesthetics of photojournalism (April 12, 2021)

Photojournalist and documentary photographer Sanna Irshad Mattoo interacted with the students of Department of Journalism & Mass Communication (DJMC), Govt. College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar on April 12, 2021. During the interaction session titled ‘Inside and Outside the Frame: Ethics & Aesthetics of Photojournalism’, Sanna shared her experience as a photojournalist. She also shared the story behind some of her acclaimed photo stories. Sanna presently contributes to the international wire agency Reuters as a Multimedia journalist. Her work has also been published in Al-Jazeera English, TRT world, TIME, South China Morning Post and The Nation among other international media outlets.

  • GCW M.A. Road hosts interaction session with senior journalist Riyaz Masroor (April 10, 2021)

Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Govt. College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar held an interaction session with senior journalist Mr. Riyaz Masroor on April 10, 2021 (Saturday). Mr. Masroor is currently working as J&K correspondent for BBC World Service. In the session titled ‘Multimedia for Beginners’, Mr. Masroor shared valuable tips with the students to excel as a multimedia journalist. He shared his experience of working on important reporting beats including politics. He also spoke extensively about the opportunities and challenges in contemporary media industry.

  • Shakoor Rather on ‘World of News Agencies’,  ‘Life in the Clock Tower Valley’ (March 27, 2021)

Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Govt. College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar held an interaction session with journalist and author, Mr. Shakoor Rather on March 27, 2021 (Saturday). Shakoor is currently working as Deputy News Editor with India’s leading news agency- Press Trust of India. In the session titled ‘The World of News Agencies’, he shared valuable tips with the students to excel as a multimedia journalist. Shakoor spoke extensively about the structure and functioning of PTI. He also shared his experience of working on his debut novel- ‘‘Life in the Clock Tower Valley’ .

  • Journalism Dept. hosts workshop on ‘Fact Checking’ in collaboration with Google News Initiative (Oct 11, 2020)

As part of Google News Initiative, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (DJMC), Government College for Women, M. A. Road, organised a day-long online workshop on ‘Fact Checking’ on October 11, 2020. The workshop aimed at exploring methods to help verify authenticity of images, videos and reports on social media and elsewhere online. Mr. Bharat Nayak, a certified trainer with Google News Initiative, was the resource person for the workshop. The workshop focused on the menace of fake news content, including photographs and videos. He imparted hands-on training to journalism students on verification of photographs and videos.

  • Journalism students attend workshop at Kashmir Press Club (Nov 16-17, 2019)

Students of outgoing batch of Journalism & Mass Communication attended a two-day workshop on Techniques of Reporting organised by Kashmir Press Club on November 16-17, 2019. The resource persons for the workshop included senior journalists like Parvaiz Bukhari of international news agency AFP, Tariq Bhat of The Week magazine, Zafar Iqbal of IANS wire agency (formerly with NDTV), Naseer A. Ganai of Outlook magazine, Idris Lone of News Nation channel, Najeeb Mubaraki (academician/writer), Mudassir Ali of Greater Kashmir and acclaimed freelance photojournalist Showkat Nanda.

  • Journalism students interact with Naveed Iqbal of ‘Indian Express’ (July 15, 2019)

Department of Journalism & Mass Communication held an interaction session with Ms. Naveed Iqbal, Principal Correspondent, The Indian Express on July 15, 2019.In the session titled ‘Excelling in Print Journalism’, Ms. Naveed shared her experiences of working on important reporting beats including politics and education for The Indian Express in Delhi and later in J&K. She shared valuable tips with the students to excel in reporting.

  • Journalism students interact with Shahana Butt of Press TV (July 15, 2019)

Department of Journalism & Mass Communication hosted Ms. Shahana Butt, Producer/Correspondent with Press TV International, for an interaction session on ‘Excelling in broadcast Journalism’ on July 15, 2019. Shahana shared experiences from her journalistic career to highlight the things one should bear in mind to excel as a broadcast journalist.

  • Editor News DDK interacts with journalism students (July 12, 2019)

Department of Journalism &Mass Communication (DJMC), Govt. College for Women, M. A. Road, Srinagar hosted an interaction session with Editor News, Doordarshan Kendra Srinagar, Mr. Shabir Ahmad at the college conference hall on 12th July 2019. In the interaction session titled ‘Prospects of Public Relations’, Mr. Shabir delved on various aspects of the theme, including the job profile of a PR practitioner and employment prospects of the profession.

  • Journalism students visit Press Enclave, interact with scribes (June 24, 2019)

Students of Department of Journalism and Mass Communication visited the office of daily ‘Rising Kashmir’ on June 24, 2019 to understand the functioning of newspapers. The students of 3rd semester interacted with the editorial and management staff of the newspaper at its Press Enclave office. They were accompanied by Head of Department, Dr. Suhail Ahmad.

  • Workshop on ‘Audio-Video Editing’ (May 10-11, 2019)

A two-day workshop on ‘Audio-Video Editing’ for students of semester 5 (BMMMC) was held with the support of Media Education Research Centre (MERC), Kashmir University on May 10-11, 2019. Mr. Imran Latief (AV Editor, MERC) was the resource person for the workshop which was held at the varsity’s studio. On the first day, technical sessions were held on important aspects of radio production including packaging and sound editing. The second day was based on technical sessions on various aspects of Video Documentary Production including documentary camera, shooting and editing styles.

  •  Guest Lecture on ‘Citizen Journalism’ (May 4, 2019)

A guest lecture on ‘Citizen Journalism in Indian context’ was organized for 4th semester students of English Honors who have opted for Citizen Journalism as their Generic Elective course on May 4, 2019. Dr. Rabia Noor (Assistant Professor, Dept of Journalism, IUST) was the resource person for the workshop which was held in the college conference hall. In two technical sessions, Dr. Noor deliberated on various aspects including history of CJ in India, instances of CJ in Kashmir and potential of CJ to supplement mainstream media.

  • Guest Lecture on ‘Applications of Photoshop’ (May 4, 2019)

A guest lecture on ‘Applications of Photoshop’ was organized for 5th semester students of BMMMC on May 4, 2019. Mr. Sameer Wani (Production Assistant, Dept of Convergent Journalism, Central University of Kashmir) was the resource person for the workshop which was held in the department lab. In the first technical session, he demonstrated the different composition techniques of photography while the second session was dedicated to use of Photoshop editing software.

Interaction held on World Press Freedom Day (May 3, 2019)
On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Govt. College for Women, M. A. Road Srinagar hosted an interaction session with noted journalist and media academician, Mr. Raashid Maqbool on May 3, 2019. Mr. Raashid delved on various dimensions, including the critical relationship between media and democracy. Mr. Raashid referred to the watershed moments of journalism. On the occasion, rich tributes were paid to the journalists who were killed in the line of duty, including Syed Shujaat Bukhari who was assassinated outside his office in June 2018.

Event to welcome Batch 2019 (April 16, 2019)
Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Govt College for Women, M A Road, Srinagar organised a function on April 16 to welcome the 2019 batch. Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Yasmeen Ashai was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Welcoming the fresh batch, Prof. Ashai called on the students to be pro-active in academics as well as extra-curricular activities. Prof. Ashai said students should take active part in discussions, debates and other productive activities organised by the college on regular basis. The students presented comedy, poetry, song, dance and other cultural skits. Dean Arts Prof. Rubeena Khateeb, Staff Secretary, Prof. Muzaffar Ahmad and Joint Staff Secretary, Syed Aijaz were also present on the occasion.

Valedictory-cum-screening of ‘Short Film-making’ course (April 15, 2019)
The valediction of the month-long certificate course on ‘Short Film-making’- conducted by Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Govt. College for Women, M. A. Road, Srinagar- was held on April 15, 2019. Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Yasmeen Ashai was the chief guest on the occasion. Prof. Yasmeen Ashai appreciated the efforts of students in making the short-films on important and sensitive themes and assured of all possible help in terms of infrastructure and other logistical support. Dean Arts, Prof. Rubeena Khateeb and Coordinator IQAC, Prof. Mehnaz Sheikh also hailed the efforts of the students and shared their inputs about the films. Head of Department, Dr. Suhail Ahmad briefed the gathering about the course and the emerging genre of short film-making. The films which were screened included ‘Homeless’, ‘Paper Tale’, ‘Sapience’, ‘ABCD’, ‘Scars’ and ‘Reporter’s Struggle’. The function concluded with certificate distribution.

Kashmir World Film Festival (Nov 28-Dec 4, 2018)

Our students actively participated in the different editions Kashmir World Film Festival. The students attended the morning workshop/special classes on different dimensions of film-making conducted by renowned theatre and Bollywood personalities on the sidelines of the festival with screening of classic films in the afternoon. Infact, some of our students were part of the festival organizing team and gained valuable experience in event management.

One-month Certificate Course on ‘Short Film-making’ (Nov 19-Dec 20, 2018)
In the run upto the NAAC team visit, the department conducted a one-month Certificate Course on ‘Short Film-making’ with participants drawn from semester 4 of BJMC. Besides the classes on theoretical concepts related to short-film making, the course also involved practical exercises. In the latter half of the course, the participants were divided into groups and asked to work on short films.

Workshop on ‘Online Verification and Fact Checking’ (Nov 3, 2018)
As part of Google News Initiative, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication organised a day-long workshop on ‘Online Verification and Fact Checking’ on November 3, 2018. The workshop focused on the menace of fake news content, including photographs and videos. Noted journalist, Faisul Yaseen was the resource person for the workshop. He imparted hands-on training to journalism students on verification of photographs and videos. He also deliberated on the Google News initiative.

3-day film festival on environmental issues (September 24-26, 2018)
The 4th semester BMMMC students of our department attended 3-day film festival on ‘Conservation of water with special focus on climate change’ organized by Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMMRC) Kashmir University on September 24-26, 2018. Four of our students also attended a special 2-day workshop for budding film-makers on environmental issues with award winning documentary makers as resource persons.

 Media Festival at GDC Baramulla (September 15, 2018)
Our students attended day-long Media Festival at Govt Degree College Baramulla on September 15, 2018. The event was marked by meaningful interaction between students from journalism departments of different institutions. Media students of GDC Baramulla performed enthralling skits and exhibited films and photos captured by them, serving as an inspiration for our students.

Field Trip to Bootapathri (September 11, 2018)
The department organized one-day field trip to Bootapathri (Gulmarg) on September 11, 2018. The students captured different facets of the unexplored tourist destination. They also interacted with local nomads to get a glimpse of their unique lifestyle.

 3-day workshop on Cinematography (September 4-6, 2018)
The department conducted a 3-day workshop on Cinematography from September 4 to 6, 2018. Noted cinematographer and editor, Mohammad Younis Zargar was the resource person for the workshop. He dealt with the basic concepts of cinematography including importance of composition and lighting. He also engaged students in practical exercises and reviewed the assignments.

Week-long Workshop on Graphic Designing (Dec 15-22, 2017)
A one-week workshop on Graphic Designing was conducted for semester 3 (BMMMC) from December 15-22, 2017. Noted graphic artist, Mr. Akhter Rasool from EMMRC, Kashmir University was the resource person for the workshop which dealt with various technical aspects of newspaper layout designing.

 CEMCA event at New Delhi (February 21 and 22, 2018)
One of our students Farshita Wesh was one of the select few students nominated to attend two-day event organized by Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA) New Delhi on February 21 and 22, 2018. The event included a one-day workshop on documentary filmmaking, film screening and award ceremony.

 Media Conclave at IUST Awantipora (December 6, 2017)
Students of journalism department attended a day-long media conclave titled ‘Comm Con: A Conclave for Communication and Journalism Students’ organized by Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), in collaboration with PACT, an international development organization. Students interacted with eminent media personalities including well known investigative journalist, Saikat Datta, Zaffar Iqbal of NDTV, advertising executive Jaibeer Ahmad, Press TV correspondent, Shahana Butt, RJ Nasir Khan of 92.7 FM and Bilal Zaidi of CrowdNewsing.

Short films made on the theme of ragging as part of UGC initiative
In September 2017, the department received a letter from Additional Secretary University Grants Commission (UGC) regarding a National University Film Making Competition to spread awareness on ragging among students. The letter was appended with a cover letter from Registrar Cluster University Srinagar. The department engaged students for the same and they came up with two short films on theme of ragging titled- ‘The Rebuke’ and ‘Broken Not’. The films entries were sent to UGC through Cluster University. In an in-house screening, the films were appreciated by the faculty.

15-day guest lecture series on Multimedia & Animation ((September 16-30, 2017)
The department conducted a 15-day guest lecture series on Multimedia & Animation from September 16 to 30, 2017. Mr. Saqib Wani of Govt Degree College (Boys) was the resource person. He dealt with basic concepts of computer graphics and animation including 2D and 3D animation. He also engaged students in practical exercises and reviewed the assignments.
12. Two-day photography workshop in association with Sony India (Sep 9-10, 2017)
Department of Journalism & Mass Communication conducted a two-day workshop on photography in collaboration with Sony India Pvt Ltd. Noted photographer and Sony Alpha specialist Mr. Sameer Ashraf was the resource persons for the workshop. During the technical sessions, spanning two days, the resource person dealt with various nuances of photography like composition and lighting.

Visit to Radio Kashmir (June 3, 2016)
Students of the department visited Radio Kashmir Srinagar on June 3, 2016 and interacted with Director Radio Kashmir, Syed Humayun Qaiser. During the visit the students were made aware of the functioning of various sections of the station.

Documentary workshop (May 31, 2016)
The department held a one-day workshop on ‘Documentary Film Education’ on May 31, 2016. Noted Kashmiri filmmaker Bilal A Jan was the resource person for the workshop during which students were exposed to various skills and techniques of documentary film-making. 

Press Freedom Day seminar (May 3, 2016)
The department organized a one-day seminar on May 3, 2016 to mark the World Press Freedom Day. Bureau Chief, Economic Times, Hakeem Irfan, Assistant Professor, Dept of Journalism & Mass Comm, IUST, Ms. Monisa Qadri spoke on the occasion. The event was marked by discussion on various facets of freedom of speech and expression in contemporary times.

3-day workshop on ‘Peace Journalism’ at IUST (July 28-30, 2015)
Our students attended 3-day workshop on Peace Journalism which was conducted by Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of at Islamic University of Science and Technology, Awantipora in collaboration with Centre for International Relations from July 28-30, 2015. Prof. Steven Youngblood (Director, Centre for Global Peace Journalism, Park Journalism, USA) was the chief resource person for the workshop.

Lehar Media Summit (July 25-26, 2015)
The students of our department attended a two-day Media Summit organized by NGO Lehar on July 25-26, 2015 at Shere Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) Srinagar. Students got to interact with distinguished media personalities including Kuldip Nayyar, Saeed Naqvi, Sidharth Vardarajhan, Shahid Sidiqi, Rana Ayub, Humra Qureshi and Saba Naqvi.
