DJMC hosts talk on ethics and aesthetics of photojournalism

Photojournalist and documentary photographer Sanna Irshad Mattoo interacted with the students of Department of Journalism & Mass Communication (DJMC), Govt. College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar on April 12, 2021.

During the interaction session titled ‘Inside and Outside the Frame: Ethics & Aesthetics of Photojournalism’, Sanna shared her experience as a photojournalist. She also shared the story behind some of her acclaimed photo stories.

Sanna presently contributes to the international wire agency Reuters as a Multimedia journalist. Her work has also been published in Al-Jazeera English, TRT world, TIME, South China Morning Post and The Nation among other international media outlets. In India her work has been published by reputed organizations like The Hindu, Caravan Magazine, Firstpost, The Quint and various other media outlets.

Earlier, Head, Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Dr. Suhail Ahmad congratulated Sanna on behalf of the department for securing the prestigious Magnum Foundation fellowship.

She is one of only 11 photographers chosen by Magnum Foundation. As per the Magnum statement, Sanna and the other selected fellow photographers were selected for “challenging injustice, pursuing social equity, and advancing human rights through photography”.

Sanna is also a Population Reference Bureau’s (PRB) fellow (2021 Women’s Edition South Asia program). She is one among 10 grantees across South Asia of Serendipity Arles Grant 2020. She has also worked as a Multimedia Producer in the local media outlet —Kashmir Walla, and contributed to ZUMA Press.

Her visual documentation and photographic work from Kashmir has been screened and exhibited in various exhibitions and festivals.

The session concluded with formal Vote of Thanks by 2nd semester student Sualiha Zubair.
