CM Scooty Scheme: 6 months on, students struggle to get documents
Srinagar: Hundreds of women students, who were provided scooties on subsidy by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, are struggling to get the registration certificates (RCs) of their vehicles even after six months.
The students say that the scooty dealers, who were asked to get the RCs of the vehicles, are dillydallying in providing them the documents even as the traffic department officials are ceasing the two-wheelers.
“While traveling from college to home, a few days ago, I was stopped by the traffic policemen at Jehangir Chowk. I told them that I have not yet received my RC from the concerned dealer, but they didn’t listen and seized my scooty. It was kept at Maisuma police station and later I had to pay a sum of Rs 1500 as fine to get my scooty back,” said a 2nd semester arts student of Women’s College, MA Road.
The scooty scheme for meritorious women students of the state was launched by Mehbooba Mufti on September 09, 2016. The CM distributed 150 scooties among the students of the Government College for Women, MA Road, Srinagar.
The scheme was very helpful for the students as the state provided half of the basic price of the scooty. Besides, the students could easily travel to their educational institutions without facing the everyday harassment in the overcrowded public transport.
But the lack of documents is defeating the very purpose of the scheme.
“I am not riding my scooty anymore because I don’t have the RC to show to the traffic officials. I have again started travelling by bus,” said a final year student of Women’s College.
An employee of the scooty dealer Hanief Motors said that they have received only 60 RC’s till date and rest will take time. The manager of Hanief Motors refused to talk.
