DJMC hosts multimedia masterclass with senior journalist Riyaz Masroor

Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Govt. College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar held an interaction session with senior journalist Mr. Riyaz Masroor on April 10, 2021 (Saturday).

Mr. Masroor is currently working as J&K correspondent for BBC World Service. In the session titled ‘Multimedia for Beginners’, Mr. Masroor shared valuable tips with the students to excel as a multimedia journalist.

He shared his experience of working on important reporting beats including politics. He also shared some interesting anecdotes from his professional career while stressing on the need to constantly learn and improve.

Mr. Masroor spoke extensively about the opportunities and challenges in contemporary media industry. He called on the students to ensure accuracy and fairness in their news reports through proper attribution and verification of information.

Besides working with BBC, he has been closely associated with leading local newspapers including Greater Kashmir, Kashmir Uzma and Rising Kashmir in important editorial and administrative positions.

Speaking on the occasion, Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Yasmeen Ashai said such interaction sessions provide opportunity to the students to learn from the experiences of seasoned journalists like Mr. Masroor.

Prof. Ashai said the aim of organizing regular interactions with senior media practitioners is to acquaint students with important tips of the profession and motivate them to work earnestly in pursuit of a successful career.

Prof. Ashai, who is also holding the charge of Nodal Principal for Kashmir division and Dean Academic Affairs at Cluster University Srinagar, spoke about the importance of financial independence of women for real empowerment and emancipation.

Prof. Ashai also presented a memento to the guest speaker on the occasion.

Students of semester 2, 4 and 6- currently enrolled at the department- attended the session. Mr. Masroor answered the queries of the students in an engrossing and productive interaction session.

Earlier, Head, Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Dr. Suhail Ahmad briefed the audience about the work and experience of the guest speaker. He also thanked Principal Prof. Ashai for her encouragement and constant support to the journalism department.

The session concluded with formal Vote of Thanks by 6th semester student Abrar Ashraf.
