DJMC students explore world of news agencies with Shakoor Rather of PTI

Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Govt. College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar held an interaction session with journalist and author, Mr. Shakoor Rather on March 27, 2021.

Shakoor is currently working as Deputy News Editor with India’s leading news agency- Press Trust of India. In the session titled ‘The World of News Agencies’, he shared valuable information about the structure and functioning of wire agencies. He also shared his experience of working with PTI in various roles during the last decade ranging from Copy Editor to Senior Copy Editor to Chief Copy Editor to Deputy News Editor.

Shakoor has been deputed to cover important overseas assignments from countries like US, Germany and China. He has reported from many international conferences like the Shanghai Cooperation Organization meet in China in 2016, the 70th session of the World Health Organization in Maldives in 2017, and the United Nations climate change conference in Madrid, Spain 2019.

Shakoor’s debut novel ‘Life in the Clock Tower Valley’ was released in March 2021. He also shared his experience of working on the novel and read the blurb on the occasion. He also shared valuable tips for aspiring writers.

Students of semester 2, 4 and 6- currently enrolled at the department- attended the session. Shakoor answered the queries of the inquisitive students in the Q&A session.

Earlier, Head, Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Dr. Suhail Ahmad referred to the profile of the guest speaker and the importance of news agencies in the media industry. The session concluded with formal Vote of Thanks by 4th semester student Moonis bin Muzaffar.
