38 die in fire incidents in 2017

Thirty-eight persons lost their lives while property worth Rs 64.33 crore was destroyed in a total of 2914 fire incidents which involved 1888 structures across Kashmir last year.
The official documents reveal that the property worth Rs 582 crores was saved during the rescue operations by Fire and Emergency Services in Kashmir in 2017.

The Valley also consumes 482 tonnes of fish every year.
Muhammad Hussain Wani, Senior Project Officer of fisheries department said that the demand for quality fish is increasing in Kashmir due to high protein and low-fat food that provides a range of health benefits.

Kashmiri transgenders are a tormented lot!

Rafeeq Ahmad looked like a male but loved to dress up as a woman due to which she had to face harassment and social discrimination since childhood. Rafeeq’s plight is shared by hundreds of other transgenders of Kashmir valley.
Transgenders are part of the society, but unlike men and women they don’t get the same treatment or respect. They are denied the rights and opportunities other genders avail.
As the 52-year-old transgender, Rafeeq says: “I wanted to study but the society never provided me with the liberty to do so.”
